Congress has voted to temporarily extend a sweeping tool that has helped federal agents crack down on drugs chemically similar to fentanyl. The Senate on Thursday, April 29, 2021, approved legislation extending until October an order that allows the federal government to classify so-called fentanyl analogues as Schedule I controlled substances. The drugs are generally foreign-made with a very close chemical makeup to the dangerous opioid. (U.S. Attorneys Office for Utah via AP, File)
The fentanyl problem continues to intensify locally.
The Manitowoc County Board of Supervisors has issued a warning to the community after the Drug Task Force saw a 30% increase in fentanyl-related arrests in 2022.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and is often mixed with other drugs like heroin and cocaine.
This lethal concoction lead to 19 fentanyl-related deaths in Manitowoc County last year.
In a written statement, James Falkowski, the Public Safety Chairman for the County, commended the task force, noting “Their hard work has made a significant impact in reducing drug-related crime and saving lives in our community.”
That being said, he also called on the community to “remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity related to drug use or trafficking.”
