There are fewer kids in Milwaukee classrooms this year.
The state released its enrollment figures for the new school year on Friday, and they show that once again Milwaukee Public Schools lost students.
The official headcount at MPS is just over 65,000 students.
MPS leaders were planning for a headcount of around 67,000.
The difference is worth millions of dollars because Wisconsin pays local schools based, in part, on the number of students in their classrooms.
MPS says it actually has nearly 69,000 students but blames the low headcount number on students who registered late or simply didn’t start school by September 16th when the state started its count.
