Milwaukee’s mayor and the Republican running for state attorney general sparred about police funding on social media this week.
Cavalier Johnson’s proposed budget includes a one percent reduction in sworn police officers.
But spending on police actually increases by more than $20 million.
In a tweet Tuesday night, Fond du Lac County DA Eric Toney called on the mayor to reconsider and to “make public safety his number one priority.”
Johnson responded with a tweet Wednesday morning saying the budget actually increases funding for police and urging the legislature to adequately support public safety, also telling Toney, “Milwaukee’s not your punching bag.”
