The Manitowoc County Veterans are inviting all current and former service members out to their 3rd annual Manitowoc County Veterans Picnic this weekend.
The event will start at 3:00 p.m. Sunday (September 18th) at Submariners Pub, which is the former Sandpiper, located at 4220 Memorial Drive in Two Rivers.
Jeff Tess, who owns the bar, says they will be closing at 2:00 to prepare for the event.
He said of the event, “We are going to have live music. The meal is broasted chicken, ribs, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, corn, and a bunch of desserts.”
New to the picnic this year is a collaboration with Sheboygan-based Dogs2DogTags, an organization that pairs veterans with service dogs.
Torre Willadsen, the Founder and President of Dogs2DogTags explained to Seehafer News how this partnership came to be.
“They invited us to come to one of their meetings, and we brought a dog up and met the veterans,” he said. “I met Jeff two years ago. They have been working together, and they like what we do, and we love what they do. It’s all about helping veterans.”
Manitowoc County Veterans is a Facebook group started by Ashley Smits, which has grown from a modest three members to now boasting over 500 members.
Veterans in the group will discuss benefit-related topics or will just chat with like-minded people.
This picnic is an extension of that with the in-person element.
Everyone is welcome to attend the picnic.
Food will cost $5 a plate, however, veterans will eat for free.
