Is President Joe Biden’s Student Loan Relief program the right thing to do?
That is the question a lot of people have an opinion on after it was announced this week.
Jim Medley from WOMT’s Jim and Rick Show was able to speak with Governor Tony Evers on the topic, and he said it split the difference between clearing all student loan debt and doing nothing.
“It’s probably not appropriate to think that somehow the government is going to take over the entire cost of education or paying back on education, nor do I think nothing should have been done,” Evers explained. “I think he cut it right down the middle, and I think it an appropriate response.”
Jim also spoke with some citizens at the Manitowoc County Fair, some of which agreed with the Governor, with one woman saying, “I do feel like we shouldn’t burden people, handcuff them more when they come out and try to better themselves.”
Others disagreed, including one man who said “All of these giveaways and all this stuff is not free. There isn’t any free money. If you find any let me know.”
Assemblyman Paul Tittl also voiced his concerns with the program.
“That girl who took that extra shift at the supper club in the summer time when she was going to school, she paid for her college already,” he said. “I’m also concerned about the parents that saved for 20 years so their kids could go to school, and now they don’t get the $10,000.”
