Governor Tony Evers Official Portrait
When Governor Tony Evers was running against Scott Walker in the 2018 Gubernatorial election, he blamed the crumbling roads on Walker, going as far as coining the term “Scott-holes”.
Now, the Governor is going on what he calls his statewide “Pothole Patrol Tour”, where he is literally filling potholes and discussing how the state is going to address them.
One of his stops came on Wednesday when he was in Sheboygan.
Governor Evers was joined by Mayor Ryan Sorenson, as they shoveled asphalt into several potholes before Evers spoke about using the current $5 billion surplus to fix many of the state-funded roadways in need of attention.
One of those roads that is in need of a complete overhaul is Washington Street in Manitowoc.
One of the main thoroughfares in Manitowoc is actually a part of Highway 151 and has not had any state-funded work done on it in quite some time.
The City of Manitowoc has been doing patchwork on it, using some of the “rainy day funds” to pay for resurfacing of sections, which are acting as band-aids, but the entire roadway is in desperate need of state attention.
Last year, Mayor Justin Nickles and Assemblyman Paul Tittl called on the Governor and the DOT to fix Washington Street.
Colleen Harris, the Director of the DOT’s Northeast Region, responded by saying that the road is on its schedule for 2029.
That may seem like a long way off, but according to Nickels, the state highway was originally planned to be taken care of in 2037.
