The problem became obvious every time somebody took a breath. People living in neighborhoods near the Wisconsin River could smell the raw sewage which had overflowed. Wausau city crews started working to pump the sewage out at midday Tuesday. The Wausau Public Works Department was teaming with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to protect people and the environment from the health hazards. The leak was stopped and the overflow was caught quickly enough to eliminate any long-term risk, officials say.
