MPSD School Board President Stacey Soeldner
Earlier this week, the Manitowoc Public School District’s Board of Education voted to give the Board members key fobs for all District buildings, including the schools.
This decision has left some people upset, with some people questioning the need for board members to have access to the schools.
We reached out to Board President Stacey Soeldner, who explained, “The board has been elected by the community to oversee its greatest assets: the academic program and environment for our students, the resources for our staff, and the needs of our infrastructure. What better way for us to be fully engaged in this process than having access to our schools.”
Some people believe that the board members being in the school would be a distraction for the students, but Soeldner said she believes that this would actually allow students and staff to get to know the board better.
With more key fobs in existence, there is naturally a higher risk for one to be misplaced, thus causing a security risk.
Soeldner said that “Any individual that has a key fob to our buildings needs to hold it as a high privilege. There is no more risk to the board having a key fob than any other adult. We have a way to deactivate the fobs immediately if there becomes a security risk.”
The board is also working on putting together policies regarding access to the schools, and what would happen if those policies are not followed.
