The Summer Reading Program at Manitowoc Public Library is in full swing and each week brings another exciting YA program in which Teens have an opportunity to take part! What is the Summer Reading Program you ask?
Summer Reading Program runs from right after when school gets out for the years through July 30. The program is open to everyone. All you need to do is sign up. Track you reading daily with the Beanstack app and every 7 days you read gets you a spin on the Prize Wheel! Read for 28 days to complete the program—read more than 28 days for extra prizes! It’s not too late to join in on the fun. Check out our website (www.manitowoclibrary.org) for more information and instructions on how to sign up on Beanstack.
Already think the Summer Reading Program sounds cool? Well, wait—there’s more! Every week is packed with great programming for library patrons of all ages. Teen programs are held every Friday afternoon and have included everything from Tie Dye and Candy Sushi to playing Dungeons and Dragons. On Friday, July 15, we will open MPL’s Idea Box makerspace for another fun program: the Teen Sewing Class.
First off, you may be asking, “What’s the Idea Box?” The Idea Box makerspace is an area of the library dedicated to both high-tech and low-tech hands-on learning for Teens and Adults. The Idea Box is filled with tools and equipment that allow users to tap into their creative brain and develop important STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) skills. Users can create designs with 3-D printers, play with sound (Coming Soon!), explore textile arts and crafts, scrapbook, and much more!
The Teen Sewing Classes will give Teens the opportunity to Work in MPL’s Idea Box with state of the art computerized sewing machines. During this 90-minute program, Teens will be Badged on the sewing machines. Second question: “What’s ‘badging’?” The badging process will allow Teens to learn the ins and outs of using the machines, as well as providing them with the opportunity to independently use the sewing machines at a later date. We at MPL keep a record of patrons who are badged on certain equipment and then that patron can come into the Library and use the equipment to make projects on their own time.

After the badging process is complete, the Teens will be making bags and baby hats from T-shirts. Yes, I did say a bag and baby hats. The Teens will be making baby hats that we will donate to Holy Family Memorial Hospital for newborn babies. Awesome, right!?
The Teen Sewing Class will take place in Two Sessions—one from 11 AM to 12:30 PM, with the second one running from 1-2:30 PM on Friday, July 15. Registration is required and space is limited, so if you are interested don’t wait—Act now! Teens can register in person at the MPL Youth Services Desk or by calling the Youth Department at 920-686-3030.
See you at the Library!
