A Shipwreck located about 13 miles off of the Sheboygan shoreline has received national protection.
The schooner known as the Abiah is now a part of the National Register of Historic Places.
The Abiah was launched in the summer of 1847 in Irving, New York, and served honorably for eight years carrying grain and lumber.
But in September of 1855, the Abiah was traveling from Chicago to Oconto when it was hit by a sudden violent gust of wind and capsized.
Abiah was towed back toward Sheboygan, but it sank before it reached the shore.
The exact location of the Abiah was unknown for many years until it was located in 2019, hidden beneath 220 feet of Lake Michigan water.
