Next weekend, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum will hold its monthly Saturday Learning Series on the Washington Island Ferries.
The Washington Island Ferry Line, Inc. remains an island-based business with an island-based workforce, now in its 82nd year of service.
Dick Purinton spent 47 years aboard Washington Island Ferries, working his way up from deckhand to captain, general manager to company president.
He’ll share stories from his time on the ferries, including challenges in vessel design, construction, and upkeep of the vessels, but also land-based issues such as protective break walls, frequent dredging, substantial piers, and supporting shore facilities.
The educational event will start at 11:00 a.m. at the Museum located on Maritime Drive in Downtown Manitowoc.
