City officials in Beloit and South Beloit, Illinois say it makes sense to keep Jason Griffin on the payroll.
Griffin has a dual role of fire chief for the Illinois community and a deputy for the fire department across the state line in Wisconsin.
South Beloit has been struggling to hang onto leaders for its fire department.
City administrator Sonya Hoppes says sharing a chief is “a slam dunk.”
Griffin’s new role is expected to make training more cohesive and help the firefighters in both departments get to know each other so they can work well together.
South Beloit will pay 25-percent of Griffin’s salary.
