While the official changeover of the downtown Manitowoc streets to two-way traffic is a little ways off, work will begin rather soon.
We spoke with Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels, who explained that crews will begin reconfiguring several intersections in preparation for the changeover.
The first of the three intersections is at Waldo Boulevard and North 8th Street, where a left turn lane needs to be added.
Another project will be in the area of Water, St. Clair, and North 10th Street.
“That intersection will be reconstructed to make it much safer,” the mayor explained. “And also when you are driving north on 10th Street…you won’t just fly into that neighborhood. It will be a much safer 90-degree angle.”
The final project will take place at Wisconsin Avenue, Menasha Avenue, and North 10th Street.
“That also will be configured so when you are coming off Menasha onto 10th, it’s a 90-degree angle,” Nickles said. “Right now, it’s not. You really have to turn your head back. But also, northbound traffic on 11th Street won’t be able to turn left onto Menasha as easily since it is still a one-way.”
The exact dates of the projects are not yet known, but Mayor Nickels said they would be happening “in the very near future.”
