I am not a fan of Memorial Day. Not because I don’t want to honor those who died in service of our country, but rather because it seems that a majority of people forgot what the meaning of the holiday actually is.
I cringe whenever someone says, “Happy Memorial Day”, because there is nothing happy about today. We are supposed to be honoring the men and women who put themselves into harm’s way and did not survive. The fact that this holiday has turned into just another day off for some, and a day to grill out for others bothers me to no end.
I’m not saying you can’t grill out or have a good time, but if you really want to honor what Memorial Day is truly about, go to a local cemetery and look for the little American flags.
According to Sandy Ronski, the Operations Clerk for the City of Manitowoc’s Transit, Cemetery, Parks, and Forestry Division, there are over 2,800 veterans buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc alone, and over 400,000 around the country that served with people still alive today.
All I ask is that you take some time today to remember those who fought and died to make sure you were able to grill out, spend time with family, and live the life you are so very privileged to have.
