While Manitowoc officials are very excited about the work being done in the River Point District, another group that is showing a lot of faith in the project is the Environmental Protection Agency.
The City of Manitowoc recently received another grant from the EPA for the project.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels told Seehafer News the latest round of funding earned the City $500,000 “…for continued growth in that area. The EPA and State DNR…love this project. They loved when the City bought it because they saw the economic impact it could eventually have, which is what we are seeing today.”
Nickles also said that these grants are helping them save money on the clean-up efforts, which is being put back into the project in the public access points, kayak launches, and the other “cool stuff” going into the area.
As far as what clean-up needs to be done, Nickles said the land they are working on now is already clean and safe, but there are a few pockets left to address.
“If you actually get down to the property and look, there is still a lot of land left closer to the west side and the river,” he explained. “These dollars will more than likely go toward that and phase two of what will be there.”
The City purchased the plot of land now known as the River Point District in March of 2019 from Canadian National Railroad and has been working on transforming it into usable land, and an expanded downtown.
