The 52nd celebration of Earth Day is tomorrow and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has some tips on how locals can take part in the holiday.
Volunteering for Work Play Earth Day is one way the DNR says Wisconsinites can have a direct impact on not only their own neighborhoods, but the state as a whole. In 2019, nearly 1,500 volunteers logged over 4,000 hours of service.
Earth Day was the brainchild of Wisconsin native, former Governor and U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970. His intent was to raise awareness about air and water pollution by encouraging people to celebrate the natural environment and its upkeep.
Family-friendly activities that better the environment are the name of the game on Earth Day, with volunteer activities around the state including planting trees, installing benches, removing invasive plants, painting picnic tables as well as raking leaves and picking up litter.
Those interested in signing up for an organized volunteer effort can do so online by visiting the DNR’s volunteer portal.
Locals are equally encouraged to take the day to get outside, enjoy the outdoors and reflect on year-round ways to ensure the beautiful Wisconsin landscape remains picturesque for generations to come.
