A bill written by State Senator Andre Jacque has been vetoed by Governor Tony Evers.
The measure, known as the Preserve Our Wisconsin Legacy Act, was a direct response to the protests in 2020, after protesters destroyed two historical monuments on the Wisconsin Capitol grounds.
This measure would have made causing damage or graffiti to any structure, plaque, painting, or other commemorative or historically significant monument that is on public property a Class I felony.
Jacque voiced his displeasure, saying “The Governor’s veto gives license to destroy public property that honors our ideals of democracy, equality, and human freedom.”
