Betty J. Vogel, age 98, a lifelong Manitowoc resident, passed away peacefully, on 4/6/2022, after a wonderful life with family and friends.
Betty was born January 18, 1924, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Hugo C. and Edith (Gurlie) Menzel. She attended Lincoln High School and graduated with the class of 1942. On August 13, 1947, she married Norbert J. Vogel at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary in 1997. He preceded her in death on August 27, 2006.
Betty was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and for a considerable number of years; and was the treasurer of the St. Mary’s Rosary Altar Society. Upon consolidation, she became a member of the St Francis of Assisi Parish and the St. Clare Society.
She was employed by Schaus Roofing and Mechanical Contractors for her entire working career spanning 48 years, handling all office duties, until retiring in 1990. She then joined the Manitowoc Senior Center doing knitting crocheting, needlepoint, and cross stitch. For many years, she and her friends knitted hundreds of baby hats for newborn infants and all of the pictures that grace the walls in her home are signed “Homemade by Betty”. She was also a long-standing member of the Manitowoc County Historical Society/Pinecrest Historical Village.
To the end, she loved puzzle books, word searches and going to luncheons with friends she made over the years.
Survivors include two nephews: Charles (Beth) Menzel, Green Bay and Thomas Menzel and significant other, Jane Fass, Montello. In laws, nephews: Dennis (Lana) Brunner, Manitowoc; Alan Brunner, Manitowoc; Kenneth Brunner, Whitelaw, David Siehr, Manitowoc, Thomas (Linda) Vogel, Kewaunee; Charles (Barb) Vogel, Manitowoc; Gary (Kathy) Wallander, Whitelaw; Doug (Cathy) Wallander, rural Chilton; Ron (Julie) Reimer, Whitelaw. Nieces: Cindy Siehr, Manitowoc; Sharon Vollendorf, Fond du Lac; Patricia Reimer, Two Rivers; Debbie (Mike) Peterson, Manitowoc; Wendy (Steve) Schuler, Manitowoc; Judith Vogel, Fond du Lac; Sandra Vogel, Manitowoc. Other relatives and friends also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert J. Vogel; her parents, Hugo (Edith) Menzel; father-in-law and mother-in-law Jacob (Cecelia) Vogel; her brother and sister-in-law, Floyd “Porky” (Cecelia) Menzel; sister and brother-in-law Marie (Clarence) Lishka; five brother- in-law and sister-in-law, Kathleen (Howard) Brunner; Marge (Paul) Vollendorf; Arthur (Dorothy) Vogel; Dolores (Raymond) Reimer; Elaine (Robert) Wallander; Frances “Midge” Vogel and nephews Wayne Siehr and Richard Reimer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 18, 2022, at St Francis of Assisi on Marshall, 1114 S. 21st Street, Manitowoc. The Rev. Jason Blahnik will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial with entombment to take place at the Calvary Mausoleum in Manitowoc. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:00 AM until the time of services at 11:00 AM.
