Disposing of tires seems like a chore, especially as they have been banned from landfills since 1995. They are often illegally dumped along roadways, becoming a breeding ground for pests and presenting a hazard if they catch fire.
To make the process easier, the Manitowoc County Waste Tire Collection is open now through October. Tires can be dropped off at the Manitowoc County Recycling Center on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until noon.
The process is not free, but the recycling center has a set fee scale:
- $5.85 per car tire or smaller, for five tires or less.
- $7.75 per standard truck tire, for five tires or less.
- $0.19 per pound, or $380 per ton, for quantities of six or more tires, semi tires, or tires still on their rims.
- $0.24 per pound, or $480 per ton, for off-road tires such as agricultural equipment tires, mining equipment tires and mixed loads containing off-road tires.
Anyone with tire loads of dump truck or larger quantities must call the center before arriving.
Tires from cars, trucks, semis, tractors, motorcycles, ATVs and bicycles are accepted. Rubber products that are not tires will not be accepted.
