It doesn’t get much closer than this.
The race to represent the 10th Aldermanic District in the City of Sheboygan was literally determined by the drawing of cards.
The initial vote count from last Tuesday’s election found that Joseph Heidemann won the race against Andre Walton by the slimmest of margins, 403-402.
But, the Board of Canvassers determined that an absentee ballot that was previously rejected was actually a valid vote.
That person had cast their ballot for Walton, which means the recount ended up bringing the vote to a tie at 403 votes aside.
In the case of a tie, the Board gets to decide how the tie would be broken, and they decided to have the two candidates draw cards.
The Board opened a fresh pack of cards, gave them a thorough shuffle, and the candidates each selected a card.
Walton selected the three of spades, while Heidemann got the king of hearts, which means he is now on the Common Council.
Both sides agreed that the process, while out of the ordinary, was fair, and accepted the outcome.
