The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Wisconsin DNR are overseeing a soil cleanup project at the Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) in Manitowoc.
The site is located between North 11th Street and North Water Street at Chicago Street. In a news release, the EPA explained that MGP’s were used throughout the country from the mid-1800s through the mid-1900s, and produced gas from coal, oil, and other feedstocks.
This process had several waste byproducts, including tars, purifier waste, oils, sludges, and acidic waste, causing the soil at these sites to become contaminated, along with the groundwater.
Remediation work at the Manitowoc MGP has already begun, and if all goes according to plan, the project is expected to be completed by mid-June of this year.
