April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Manitowoc County Courthouse is helping shine a light on the issue.
District Attorney Jacalyn LaBre was on WOMT’s Be My Guest program recently, where she spoke about what the staff at the Courthouse does to bring awareness to the issue.
“In April we try to highlight the need for Human Services and the work they do for the children who are in horrible situations as far as abuse and neglect,” she said. “There’s obviously still a need for foster parents, so anyone interested in being a foster parent please contact Human Services.”
If you want to help, but do not want to be a foster parent, you can also sign up to be a volunteer with the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).
LaBre also spoke about the Child Advocacy Center in Sheboygan County.

“They do a lot of work with the police officers, as well as Human Services,” the DA explained. “That’s a place we can bring the children. It’s a safe environment, and they have trained interviewers who can interview these young children and talk to them about what has been happening. There is usually medical staff that can help evaluate them as well.”
LaBre explained that the Child Advocacy Center has been working with Manitowoc law enforcement agencies, and the Human Services Department to help the children in need.
CASA has also planned another Hands Around the Courthouse event for April 27th to help raise awareness for the growing problem in our area and around the Country.
