A group of citizens in Manitowoc are directly helping Ukrainians as their homeland continues to be invaded by Russian forces.
WOMT’s Jim and Rick Show reached out to the folks from War Uber, Chris Kornely and Kyle Bryntesen, who explained that local realtor and retired member of the U.S. Military Barry Nelson is actually on the ground in Ukraine.
“Barry went to Ukraine two weeks ago,” Kornely explained. “We are helping him through War Uber to raise money so he can go buy supplies, expedite supplies, and get them into the Ukraine for the people directly.”
Bryntesen explained that a major need in the area is for medical supplies. “He was on a search for tourniquets because there is a shortage in that,” he said.
Kyle was choking up as he went on to say, “We feel detached from this war going on in Ukraine right now. The fact that tourniquets are a needed item really hit home for me because it’s not something we see everyday in our lives in Manitowoc.”
Jim and Rick then played a clip from a video Nelson posted on the War Uber Facebook page. He explained that he is on the west side of the country near the Polish border.
“There’s a hell of a group of fighters in between Lviv and Kyiv (the capitol),” he said. “They sneak groups over here and pick up warm clothes, pick up boots. If you can imagine you have never gone hiking or you have been a city person, you don’t have stuff to fight in the mud and the dirt and the muck, and if you do, you only have one or two pair and those are now shot.”
Which is why he is there. Nelson is trying to get much needed supplies to the men women and children most affected by the invasion. If you wish to help Nelson, you can bring a donation to Shoreline Hometown Credit Union in Manitowoc.
They are located at 4400 Calumet Avenue in Manitowoc, and all of the employees are trained to know what to do with that money
If you do not live near Manitowoc, you can donate by going to GoFundMe.com/f/war-uber. If you are strapped for cash but still want to help, all they ask is that you spread the word by inviting people to join the War Uber group. Nelson continually posts updates, and there is more information on that page.
