The City of Manitowoc will get an early start in the celebration of the “wearin’ of the green.”
The 24th Saint Patrick’s Parade takes place this Saturday through downtown, starting at 11:00 a.m.
Heather Nelson, manager of Moore’s Irish Pub, is in her second year as parade director.
“When we took over it was after the passing of Kathy Bundy,” she explained. “Honestly, taking it over knowing Kathy most of my life was really important last year when the parade actually went and it was the first parade after all the covid shutdowns. It really touched us that we were able to succeed and carry on something that was so important to such a (prominent) woman in our community.”
Heather said Manitowoc’s volunteer extraordinaire Tom Drill will again be leading the procession down 8th Street.
“He is in the beginning of the parade with all of our law enforcement officers leading the way,” she said. “If you know Tom you know how important he is to this community.
The parade begins Saturday morning at the corner of 8th and Washington Streets and will continue north to 8th and Chicago Streets.
As for the number of units, Nelson says they have 20 floats currently registered.
“I have had a few people sneaking in at the last minute, but we’ll take anybody who wants to participate as long as they do it before 1:00 p.m. Friday,” she told us.
Those interested in participating can stop in at Moore’s Irish Pub and grab a form.
As for the forecast, Nelson said it looks as though the snow will hold off, but it will be rather cold, so she suggests you “bundle up in your green.”
Nelson also explained that a number of downtown bars and restaurants will hold special events Saturday as part of the Saint Patrick’s celebration.
