The general public may be hearing the headline that dairy producers are receiving the most they have had per hundredweight for their milk since 2014.
Manitowoc County WE-Extension Agriculture Educator Angie Unless wants people to know what farmers are dealing with.
“Everyone dealing with almost 7% inflation, the highest in four decades, just remember that producers are dealing with it on the input side as well, that we have a lot of higher cost to do business. From everywhere from our milking towels to our Round-Up.”
Ulness notes that herd size in Manitowoc County ranges from 30 all the way up to over 5,000. She explains the average herd size in Manitowoc County is 365, compared to 177 statewide.
“Each and every one of them is focused on taking care of the animals and producing a high-quality product for the consumer. So, we do have a higher than average herd size.”
