Criminal charges related to controversial searches of students have led to the superintendent of Suring Public Schools being placed on paid administrative leave during a special board meeting last night.
The charges against Kelly Casper are based on the searches of six students who were told to strip down to their underwear during a search for vape cartridges.
She has been charged with six felony counts of false imprisonment.
After about 40 minutes of public testimony, the board voted to make the decision. The testimony was heated and emotional.
Tabitha School has students in the district and demanded action, saying “It’s disgusting that it has to come to this!”
Gina Winkler has a son with disabilities and discussed the dilemma she has had to face. “This one person is making me question: do I continue to send him? He can’t come home and tell me if someone mistreats him. That’s unfair. I shouldn’t have to pull him out of a school that he loves. He loves seeing the staff.”
Casper officially begins her paid leave today.
