Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day in which we remember the man who helped lead the way for people of color in America to achieve equal rights through the 50’s and 60’s. Silver Lake College will be holding a week-long event in honor of the Civil Rights leader, starting with their lunch today. Lunch will consist of MLK’s favorite meal, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, candied yams, collard greens, black-eyed peas and pecan pie. Other activities will include small group discussions on a variety of social justice topics and quizzes with prizes. “A Celebration of Civic Engagement” exhibit will highlight quotes from a diverse group of prominent or emerging civic leaders, giving viewers the opportunity to reflect and write down actions that they plan to take this year. Martin Luther King Jr was a very influential man, and SLC is doing their part to ensure his legacy is not soon forgotten.
