Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig
Seniors in Manitowoc County are being advised to keep their eyes open for a scam targeting their age group.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig explained that his department received a tip from a citizen, who reported getting calls from spoofed numbers in which the scammer tells the person on the other line they need a new Medicare card and ask them to verify the personal information on their current card.
He noted that Medicare representatives will never call you and ask for information they should already have.
If you do get a call asking for Medicare information, you are encouraged to hang up and call 1-800-633-4227, where an actual Medicare representative can answer any questions you may have.
Also, if you suspect identity theft or feel like you gave your personal information to someone you shouldn’t have, contact the Federal Trade Commission and notify your local law enforcement agency.
