An Algoma woman has been convicted in a child drowning case from last year.
24-year-old Cheyanne Wierichs was facing charges of Neglecting a Child Resulting in Death, and Possession of Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia, but the drug charges were dismissed.
Wierichs was giving her 7-month-old child a bath on February 9th, 2021, when she stopped watching the infant.
The criminal complaint states that she admitted to watching videos on YouTube, left the bathroom to connect her phone to a Bluetooth speaker, and was listening to a song.
It was estimated that Wierichs had left her infant alone in the bathtub for several minutes unattended, which resulted in the infant drowning.
Wierichs is due back in court on May 18th for her sentencing.
