The Miss Green Bay Area competition will be taking place tomorrow, and a Manitowoc resident is one of the six women vying for the crown and sash.
Marissa Gove became interested in competing in the Miss Universe subsidiary after a previous winner visited Mishicot High School, where Gove graduated.
Marissa told us that she learned about how the candidates are given a platform to make a difference in their community by promoting a social initiative they believe in.
Gove is running on the social initiative of “Promoting Self Confidence through Healthy Living.”
“I haven’t always been the most confident person, but recently I have really started working at it,” she explained. “I feel that living a healthy lifestyle makes me more confident, and I feel that I can make a difference in my community by talking and spreading the word that so many people struggle with confidence.”
Each candidate will also show off a talent, and a lot of the time that involves singing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument.
But, Marissa will be showcasing her kickboxing skills.
“Growing up, me, my dad, and my sisters all used to mess around with boxing gloves and whatnot,” she told us. “So when I needed a talent to showcase, thought why not bring this up from my childhood.”
We also asked Marissa why she feels this competition is important for young women.
She said, “You get to pick a topic that you are passionate about, and you get to go around your community bringing awareness to it. You develop so many professional skills, and you get the opportunity to earn scholarship money.”
The Miss Green Bay Area Competition will be held tomorrow afternoon in the Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center and will begin at 4:00 PM.
However, if you are unable to attend but still want to support Marissa or any other candidate, you can vote for them to win the People’s Choice Award.
Voting for that honor, and tickets for the event can both be found at MissGreenBayArea.com.
