Anne Marie Darby, 97, of Manitowoc, passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center under the care of Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.
Anne was born on December 18, 1924 in Nauheim, Germany. She worked as an IBM keypunch operator for the U.S. Army in Frankfurt after World War II. Anne married Sergeant Daniel A. Darby on May 5, 1948 in Stuttgart, Germany and sailed to America in August 1949. Anne and her family eventually settled in Manitowoc after Army life. She was employed by the Aluminum Specialty Company, Copps Food Store, and ABC Supermarket until her retirement.
She was a member of Saint John’s United Church of Christ. While Anne was a member, she served two terms on the church council and was a member of the Ladies Guild. Anne enjoyed getting together with her family and many lady friends to socialize and liked to keep up on her German language skills as a member of the German-American Club and Sangerbund Singing Society.
Survivors include her children, Linda (Andy) Plekan, Patricia (Randy) Field, all of Manitowoc, and Steven Darby of Neenah; three grandchildren, Eric Plekan, Victoria (Justin) Meler, all of Manitowoc, and Matthew (Liza) Field of Slinger; and three great-grandchildren, Abby and Emily Field of Slinger and Logan Meler of Manitowoc. She is also survived by a sister, Elisabeth “Elli” Lange of Manitowoc; nephew, Brian Lange of Manitowoc; and nieces, Carol Moe and Nancy Uzzi of Texas.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents, George and Marie (Becker) Jockel; sisters, Minnie Reinheimer and Marianne Burger of Germany; and husband, Daniel, in March of 1977.
Private family services will be held with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. The family is planning for a Celebration of Life in the summer of 2022. Online condolences to the family may be sent to www.harriganparksidefuneralhome.com.
