The Milwaukee chapter of the American Red Cross has apologized for asking fire victims in some neighborhoods to go to its offices, or nearby police stations, to seek help. The Red Cross cited staff shortages, but the request generated accusations of discrimination. The zip codes affected were in low-income and heavily black and Latino areas. Milwaukee Alderman Khalif Rainey had called the move “red-lining.” In response, the Red Cross has apologized, said it didn’t intend to offend anyone,” and pledged to help fire victims no matter their location. It says the December change will eventually be in effect for the entire city.
