The City of Appleton is offering to pay for the replacement of lead service pipes on private properties.
The City Council had previously passed an ordinance requiring property owners to replace those pipes, but that can cost upward of $5,000.
Now, City Officials are looking to create a program that would use state and federal funds, including a portion of their American Rescue Plan Act funds, to cover those costs.
To help bolster this program, the City is applying for a $500,000 grant from the DNR.
The replacement will not be completely free of charge for homeowners, however, as they will still have to pay the restoration costs.
This program will also not cover lead pips inside homes.
A survey of the pipelines in Appleton revealed that 87 service lines are still made of lead and need to be replaced.
