The YMCA is a big proponent of self-image. Not only do they offer many different ways to improve your health, but their Youth and Family Coordinator, Barb Schmidt, aims to help teens understand how media influences them by putting on a program called Media Madness. Schmidt stated “Every time you open your computer or watch TV, look at a billboard, someone is trying to sell us something. The average person will see an advertisement, about 360 of them a day. A lot of them are about food, and why you should eat their product over another product. This (Media Madness) is going to dive into that. What are they actually selling. Help you figure out the who what where how and the why behind our media.” The program will begin on January 11th, and will meet Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. It is for those aged 12-14, and there is limited space. Schmidt encourages those who wish to attend to register ahead of time. For members of the Y, the cost is $8 per teen. Non Y members are also welcome to attend, with a cost of $15. For more information, and to register, visit mtrymca.com, or stop down to the Y in person.
