One of the biggest changes to the status quo in the area this year was the disollution of the tourism agreement between the Cities of Manitowoc and Two Rivers and the Manitowoc Area Visitor and Convention Bureau.
As we previously reported, Manitowoc has begun the process of creating their own tourism department and is looking to hire individuals to hold the positions of Director of Tourism, a Destination Marketing Manager, and a Media and Special Events Coordinator.
Two Rivers is also working on its own tourism service, as City Manager Greg Buckley explained, saying “Last week, the Room Tax Commission did vote on its intent not to pursue a further contractual relationship with the Manitowoc Area Visitor and Convention Bureau, and to pursue other means of contracting for tourism services.”
Buckley said that the main reason for their disengaging from the MAVCB was brought upon mainly because Manitowoc decided they were done with the agreement.
“We take seriously that Manitowoc has indicated its not going to engage, at least not in any great extent, with the MAVCB for provision of tourism services. Manitowoc kind of going their own way in that regard,” Buckley said, “Our Room Tax Commission, at least a majority of the Commission, felt it’s time that Two Rivers seriously pursues alternatives.”
Buckley said they are continuing to work with Manitowoc on tourism, as many visitors see the area as Manitowoc/Two Rivers, as opposed to the two cities being entirely separate.
The Room Tax Commission in Two Rivers will continue to gather on a regular basis to figure out exactly how everything will be run.
