The total number of hunting accidents reported this year may have been lower throughout the state, but there was one fatality.
According to the DNR, five people were injured during the nine-day gun deer season, and one person was killed in Iron County.
A 65-year-old man was climbing out of his tree stand in the Town of Saxon on November 23rd, when he knocked over his firearm.
The contact with the ground caused the weapon to fire, striking the man in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other five incidents, including the child shot in Door County, all required hospital treatment, but those involved survived.
Last year, there were nine incidents and one fatality, and this year’s numbers are below the 10 year average of 6.8 accidents per year.
