The defense team for the man accused of causing a triple fatal car crash in Green Bay is claiming the victim had drugs in their system.
23-year-old Abdi Ahmed is facing three counts of 1st Degree Reckless Homicide after he reportedly caused the crash that killed Jessie Saldana, Sonia Gonzalez-Guillen, and Sonia Gonzalez.
Saldana was said to be driving the car that was struck by Ahmed, who was driving at speeds around 90 MPH on Lombardi Avenue on June 28th of last year.
The defense is claiming that because he had marijuana and amphetamine in his system, his driving may have been impaired.
They claim that if he hadn’t been impaired, he wouldn’t have pulled in front of the speeding vehicle.
Brown County District Attorney David Lasee argued to the court that Saldana isn’t the one on trial and that the only issue for the jury is if Ahmed’s actions were negligent and a substantial factor in the fatalities.
Abdi will be back in court on December 21st where Judge John Zakowksi will make a ruling on admitting this evidence in the upcoming trial.
No date has been set for that trial.
