Madison police say more than a dozen officers responded to East High School Monday when a fight among students escalated.
Fire crews also rushed to the school after somebody pulled a fire alarm.
Madison Metropolitan School District officials say the first fight started at about 11:30 a-m in the school’s welcome center.
When firefighters determined it was safe to return to class, most students did so – but some stayed outside and more fights broke out.
Officers deployed pepper spray to stop the altercations.
Eight students needed medical attention, including five who were taken to a nearby hospital.
Two teenagers were cited, included one accused of assaulting an officer.
