
A Madison police officer who was shot during an arrest early Sunday morning is expected to recover.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating the incident.
MPD officers were trying to take a wanted person into custody when the shot was fired.
The officer is in a local hospital for treatment.
No names have been released.
The suspect was arrested and was in possession of a weapon.
The DCI is leading the investigation, assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol and the state Crime Lab.
The UW-Madison campus was alerted to the police activity at about 1:30 am and the public was asked to stay away from the area.
Police say the officer is the first who was shot in the line of duty in more than 20 years.
