A fire in Sheboygan yesterday afternoon not only took a home away from a family, but their dogs as well.
The Fire Department was informed of the blaze in the 1000 block of North 12th Street at around 3:45 PM and arrived to find smoke and flames coming from all sides of the two-story structure.
All of the residents were able to escape, except for the family pets. Firefighters were able to rescue two turtles, but the canines did not survive.
After battling the fire for about an hour and a half, the fire was completely extinguished, however, the home suffered an estimated $150,000 in damage.
Two firefighters were also treated for minor injuries.
Crews say the fire appears to have started in the basement, however, the exact cause has not yet been released. The American Red Cross is helping the four residents of the home.
The Sheboygan Fire Department received help from five other fire departments, namely Manitowoc, Kohler, Cedar Grove, Wilson, and the Town of Sheboygan, as well as the Sheboygan Police Department, and Orange Cross Ambulance.
