Scammers have been trying to take advantage of people since the beginning of time, and now is no different.
There are many different scams, ranging from phony websites to people calling and pretending to be from law enforcement. One of those scams has hit Manitowoc County, however, this one is a little bit different.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig explained while on WOMT’s Be My Guest Program, “What they’re doing is they are targeting people on the sex offender list. They are basically telling people if you pay $1,000 and stop down to the Sheriff’s Office to submit your DNA, we can get you removed from the sex offender list. That is not accurate, that does not happen, we are not going to call you and do that.”
Hartwig said they had three people fall victim to that scam last weekend. A listener also asked about a letter she received. The letter claimed that this individual was selected to do a mandatory survey online, and the listener wanted to know if it was legit.
Hartwig said that he hadn’t heard of that one yet, suggesting the listener, “investigate that a little further before you do anything with it.”
If you believe you have been targeted by scammers, you are encouraged to report the scam to the Sheriff’s or Police Department, so they can keep track of all the ways scammers are trying to swindle residents.
