A December 21st hearing at the Wisconsin State Capitol will focus on a new bill eliminating the D-N-R’s wetland development permit system, The Senate Committee on Natural Resources and the Assembly Committee on Regulatory Licensing Reform will hear testimony on a proposed change which would let developers build on state wetlands without getting a permit. Wisconsin has about five-million wetland acres, with about 10-to-30 percent under state jurisdiction. The federal government controls the rest. Under the new law, developers would still have to create one-point-two acres of wetlands for every one acre they filled.
