Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere voiced his excitement regarding a recently passed bill, which he had a hand in writing. Jacque, and State Rep. James Edming of Glen Flora introduced the bill, which ends state taxation of active-duty military pay.
Jacque told Seehafer News that this bill brings Wisconsin up to par with several surrounding states. “The vast majority of states, including all of our surrounding states, don’t tax active duty military pay,” Jacque explained. “The negative impact this has had on Wisconsin…is that as our active duty servicemen and women enter the service from Wisconsin, they get their driver’s license, and transfer their tax residency to another state.
As a result, we don’t get them back at the point that they retire from the military.” Jacque also explained that not only was Wisconsin missing out on the veteran, but also their spouses and children. “These are certainly very skilled workers, that we can immediately find places for in our workforce,” Jacque said. “Ultimately this is going to be a huge revenue plus for our state in the long term, but it also respects that military service.” Jacque called the bill a “huge step in the right direction.”
