The Save the Flame Golf Outing will be taking place tomorrow (June 19th) at Autumn Ridge Golf Course.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the Eternal Flame Fund, which is used to keep the Eternal Flame Veteran Memorial in Manitowoc burning. This unique memorial was constructed in 1923, just south of Michigan Avenue on North 18th Street, and the flame was added in 1969.
In 2012, the then Finance Director for the City of Manitowoc, Steve Corbeille realized that without a significant fundraising effort, there would be no more money in the Eternal Flame fund, and the flame would go out.
So, nine years later, the fund is sitting at $190,000, just shy of the $200,000 needed to keep the flame lit forever.
The Eternal Flame Committee hopes to surpass its goal at the event on Saturday.
Even if you do not wish to golf, you can stop out and make a donation, or talk to some of the veterans that will be on hand. Registration begins at 8:00 AM, with tee-off at 9:00.
