Milwaukee County’s judiciary panel will act today (Thursday) on the settlement of a lawsuit against the maker of a smartphone search game. Candy Lab Incorporated challenged a county ordinance that required permits and cleanups from people who search county park sites for landmarks that provide clues toward winning their games. The County Board adopted the ordinance in 2016 after big crowds left messes at Milwaukee’s Lake Park as they searched for “Pokemon Go” clues. This summer, federal judge J-P Stadtmueller agreed with Candy Lab that the ordinance violated the game maker’s First Amendment right to free expression — and the firm and county agreed to an 83-thousand dollar settlement while the county agreed to stop enforcing the measure. Corporation Counsel Margaret Daun says officials will reconsider how to regulate game activity, and will write a new ordinance.
