Runners from Manitowoc Lincoln are leaving after school tomorrow (May 7th) for the alternate season State Cross Country championships in Janesville.
The Ships of Coach Michael Bubolz have enjoyed a very successful boys season and after winning the Whitewater Sectional will compete as a team Saturday at Blackhawk Golf Course.
Coach Bubolz told Seehafer News that this season was a long time coming.
“We have been waiting for 18 months for this opportunity, he said “We knew at the end of last year that this is where we wanted to be when we ended the next season.”
He also revealed to us that, “I tell this to them every single meet, ‘My goal for you is get to the start line, and get to the finish line…Whatever might happen in between, I’m proud of you if you can tell me that you left it all out there and I did the best that I can do.’”
Sam Jacobson, who followed up a basketball season with cross country, spoke about closing his senior year in this manner, saying “It’s always been a huge goal of ours to go to state and a huge goal of mine. It’s something I have been thinking about for the past three years.”
He also voiced praise for his teammates saying “No matter where you are on the team, and having that competition…It pushes you to get better and chase that guy ahead of you, or not let that guy behind you go get you.”
Lincoln sophomore Mason Gates called this an unbelievable season.
“I can’t thank my teammates enough for the help throughout the whole season,” he said. “Pushing me teaching me…I’m glad I can make everyone proud for this school and this team that they have built and we can be a part of.”
Lincoln also has an individual Girls qualifier in sophomore Elena Zavala. She told us that she is “very grateful for this opportunity for this season, because it has been such a crazy year, so unpredictable. Being able to run with my team and qualifying for state, that’s crazy.”
Her race begins at 10:00 while the boy’s run starts at 11:00 AM.
