A scary situation in Little Chute last night (April 29th) turned out to be a hoax according to police.
Officers were called at around 8:00 PM claiming that there was a family disturbance that resulted in a death. The caller claimed an individual had a rifle and explosives in a home in the 1700 block of Buchanan Street and was ready to take on the police.
Local Police were aided on the scene by the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Appleton and Kaukauna Police Departments as they warned neighbors to stay in their homes.
After securing the area, it was determined that there was no real threat, and it was a case of what police call “swatting”.
That is a trend where an individual calls a local police department claiming exactly what we saw in this case, typically “pranking” someone who is live streaming online.
Over the past several years this trend has emerged in online social groups, with several people dying when police entered their home on high alert and shot the innocent victim of the phony call.
