The Wisconsin Department of Health has given the approval to resume the use of the single dose Johnson and Johnson COVID -19 Vaccine.
Manitowoc County Health Officer Stephanie Lambert says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had paused the use of the vaccine to examine some blood clotting problems.
“Fortunately, the reports of the rare blood clots remained rare, less than two out of a million people. After examining the risks and benefits the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices decided to resume the administration of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
Lambert adds, “I think it’s important to note that the 15 blood clots found of the eight million vaccinated, all occurred in women mostly under the age of 50. Blood clots have not been observed in those who received the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine.”
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices adds that although not everyone gets to choose which vaccine to receive “that any vaccine is as safe a choice than no choice at all.”
The County Health Department will be reaching out shortly to those who had to reschedule with plans to resume use of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine next week. Call 683-4155 for more information.
