The City of Two Rivers has joined many municipalities across the county to recognize crash scene first responders.
At Monday’s Common Council meeting, a proclamation deeming this week as Crash Responders Safety Week in Two Rivers was unanimously approved.
The proclamation, which was read by Two Rivers Fire Chief Dave Murack, said in part, “Therefore, let it be proclaimed that the City Council of the City of Two Rivers do hereby proclaim November 2nd through November 6th, 2026, as Crash Responders Safety Week and urge all citizens to learn more about roadway crash safety and to recognize the hard work of our emergency responders.”
He also noted why this proclamation is important in keeping our streets and those who respond to accidents safe.
“Our first responders play a key role in keeping our roadways and communities safe. Let’s do our part and keep them safe as well,” Murack explained. “The community of Two Rivers joins the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in recognizing the need for public awareness and acknowledgment that we are all responsible for preventing secondary crashes that endanger the lives of our dedicated emergency personnel.”
First established in 2016 by the Federal Highway Administration, Crash Responder Safety Week serves as an opportunity for responders who put their lives on the line to aid crash victims and to bring attention to traffic incident responder safety and how to prevent secondary crashes.
Fire Chief Murack also painted a picture of what these crash responders like himself experienced in Wisconsin last year.
“In 2025, emergency responders responded to over 120,000 traffic crashes. Of those, 2,068 crashes occurred in work zones, resulting in 620 injuries and seven fatalities,” Fire Chief Murack noted. “And at every crash scene, Emergency responders, including fire, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and towing and transportation services, are at risk of being struck and injured or even killed in a secondary crash.”
