Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested an Oshkosh middle school teacher.
Wendy Mendez was working as a Spanish teacher at Vel Phillips Middle School at the time of her arrest.
ICE claims that Mendez had entered the U.S. legally in 2020 from her homeland of Costa Rica on a temporary basis.
However, her visa had expired, and a judge ordered her removal last month after she failed to appear for a hearing.
It is being reported by multiple outlets that the missed court date was a misunderstanding, as the notice was allegedly sent to the wrong address.
Oshkosh Area School District Superintendent Dr. Bryan Davis and Vel Phillips Middle School Principal Amanda Patza sent a letter to families in which they offered counseling support, classroom coverage, and help at home for any students who need additional support.
